If you know me, you know I LOVE cheeseburgers. This butter lettuce-wrapped cheeseburger is to die for! I'm so excited about this! Kicking the bun for some butter lettuce, makes that classic, not-so-healthy cheeseburger, well...healthyish. And the best part, it couldn't be easier to make.
First, let's start with marinating the ground beef. I use the Kirkland organic ground beef from Costco. It's 85% lean and comes in a package weighing at 1.34 pounds. Any 1 pound package will work though. You can also use veggie burgers instead. I've tried this exact recipe with the Veggie Cowboy Burgers from Trader Joe's and it was just as delicious! If you do use those, broil these patties in the oven, flipping them over until both sides are crispy and a bit golden.
If you choose ground beef, place the ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Add in 1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of freshly ground black pepper, and 1 tsp of garlic powder. Mix together until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour and up to 12. This allows the meat to become more flavorful.
Take the ground beef out of the refrigerator and roll into small balls. Place on a plate baking sheet, then flatten each ball into patties. See the photo below.
For this classic cheeseburger, you will need butter lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, and American cheese. You also can't go wrong with adding sliced avocados and a thousand island sauce.
I chose butter lettuce because it has a little bit of a sweet taste to it, not to mention the texture is super soft and buttery. And the nice, large, round leaves make it perfect for wrapping the burgers.
And as far as the cheese, it doesn't get more classic than American. There just isn't any other cheese that melts the same way. And personally, I can't have a cheeseburger without it.
Once you have everything organized and ready to go, go ahead and heat the bbq or stovetop grill. I like to use the flat side of my stovetop cast iron grill, it helps create a caramelized crust on the meat.
Cook the patties until the desired doneness. Before removing the burgers, add the American cheese slices. Wait until the cheese has melted, then remove from heat.
Now it's time to assemble the burgers. Grab 2 butter lettuce leaves, place one down, and then add the burger patty. Add 1 tomato slice and some freshly sliced red onions. Then, place the second butter lettuce leaf on top and fold it around the burger.
Viola!! A lettuce-wrapped cheeseburger! I told you this was an easy one!
And to make this cheeseburger even MORE delicious, I suggest adding some avocado slices and a little thousand island sauce (just mix together some ketchup, mayo, and relish).
INGREDIENTS:
1 lb of organic ground beef
1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp of garlic powder
1 tsp of salt
1 tsp of freshly ground black pepper
1 head of organic butter lettuce
1 organic red onion, sliced
2 large ripe organic tomatoes
1 pack of organic American cheese (you will have a few slices leftover)
1 ripe organic avocado (optional)
Thousand Island Sauce (mayo, ketchup, and relish)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Marinate the ground beef. Place ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Add in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix together until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 12 hours.
2. Take ground beef out, then roll into whatever size ball you’d prefer. Place on a baking sheet and flatten each ball into a patty.
3. Clean the butter lettuce leaves, and slice the red onion and tomatoes. Set aside.
4, Grill burger patties till the desired doneness. Add American cheese, wait until it melts, then remove from heat and set aside.
5. Assemble the lettuce wrapped cheeseburgers. Wrap the butter lettuce around the cheeseburger with tomato, onion, and whatever else you’d prefer. Such as avocado slices or a thousand island sauce.
Enjoy!
